Field replacement starts at Moriches Park Soccer Complex in St. James

|

New turf fields are heading to Moriches Park Soccer Complex in St. James just in time for the coming spring leagues, the Town of Smithtown announced.

The town’s Parks Department began the removal of the old artificial field at the soccer complex last week.

This process consists of stripping the existing turf and then grading the fields. Once completed, Laser Industries will replace the infill and lay new artificial turf.

“We’re determined to give residents; especially our youth, something to look forward to in time for warmer weather,” said Smithtown Town Supervisor Ed Wehrheim. “The winter has been colder than in previous years, with folks shuttered indoors, and fearful of the pandemic — which is why the town is moving at warp speed to complete capital projects at our parks, recreational spaces, and beaches.”

This project, approved in the 2021 Capital Budget, is the first of several park improvements scheduled to be completed this year.

Additional renovation projects include improvements to the pool, restrooms, and construction of a new concession area at Landing Country Club.

East Hills and Laural Drive parks will be getting a makeover as well, along with final touches to the Flynn Memorial Ballpark and construction of a new playground and parking lot.

By the end of the fiscal year, the Town of Smithtown aims to have over 75 percent of the parks restoration projects completed under a four-year period.

“Spring will be a season of new hope for our quaint community this year,” Wehrheim said.
