The marketing firm for St. Joseph’s College and Molloy College is aiming to help students of color pursue careers in marketing and advertising, it was announced last week.

The Austin Williams Opportunity Scholarship in Marketing-Communications will provide four full-time students with a $2,500 tuition scholarship for four years.

“We have not done enough to make ours a diverse workplace or diverse industry,” said Eva LaMere, president of Austin Williams. “Every agency has an obligation to do something tangible that exposes young people of color to the marketing and advertising industry and enables them to pursue a career free from barriers.”

The program will ramp up over time, sponsoring a growing number of students each school semester. When fully implemented, the scholarship will simultaneously fund the tuition of eight students at a cost of more than $100,000 during the students’ four years of college. 

Along with financial support, the program will offer recipients paid internships at Austin Williams — located in Hauppauge — to gain professional experience during their junior and senior years at both colleges, the announcement reads.

That, and Austin Williams’ team members will serve as mentors to the students, assessing their course work and offering guidance.

“Now more than ever, it is time to live out our mission and ensure that we are providing all of our students with the opportunities they need to succeed,” said Dr. Donald R. Boomgaarden, SJC President. 

“This is the kind of tangible program of which young people of color are in need and in which we are proud to play a leading role,” adds Dr. James P. Lentini, president of Molloy College. “We salute Austin Williams for their leadership in helping our students pursue their academic and employment dreams in the advertising and marketing sectors.”
