Kings Park celebrates the long-awaited completion of Pulaski Road Municipal Parking Lot

|

After over a year of awaiting funding and construction, the Pulaski Road Municipal Parking Lot is officially completed and ready for public use.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Kings Park community leaders, nonprofit Vision Long Island, as well as state and town officials gathered on Nov. 24 to commemorate the unveiling of the new municipal lot in downtown Kings Park located on Pulaski Road, just off Main Street.

The project was funded through a $500,000 Jumpstart grant signed by Belone on Oct. 3 last year to create a lot with 23 spaces, an electric vehicle charging station with two spaces for EV vehicles, and state-of-the-art LED cost-efficient lighting.

The lot is surrounded by ornate fencing and is fully landscaped with evergreens and arborvitaes which provide additional privacy for the surrounding residency.

The new municipal lot will benefit nearby businesses such as Relish, Park Bake Shop, Shipping Center, The Reel Kitchen, and Dragon House.

“This is a great success story right here,” Bellone said. “As we battle through this pandemic, we see not only individuals suffer, and families in crisis, but small businesses suffering. While we continue to do everything we can to help small businesses survive this existential crisis, we must also help them to get back to thriving, and that is what this project represents.

Suffolk County’s Jumpstart Program is part of a comprehensive economic development plan designed to enhance planning and development throughout Suffolk’s downtown communities.

Suffolk County has awarded $14.3 million in Jumpstart funding since 2013.

Supervisor Ed Wehrheim said the town is pleased to deliver the parking lot that the community has asked for.

“This comes at a crucial time when many restaurants have used portions of their parking lots to expand outdoor dining,” said Wehrheim. “This project also creates a more pedestrian-friendly downtown that supports walkability, increases foot traffic to local businesses, and decreases traffic congestion.”

Vision Long Island, a group aimed at growing businesses on the island, assisted in the completion of the municipal parking lot through its Revitalization Action Plan for the Kings Park community.

The group was commissioned by the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce and Civic Association after a study of the town’s “Restaurant Row” showed that the downtown businesses were suffering due to a lack of sufficient parking.

The hope is that the new lot will help fill previously vacant shops with more small businesses for Kings Park.

“This is a great example for all of Long Island and it will help towards revitalization once this pandemic is long gone,” said Eric Alexander of Vision Long Island.
